Friday Night Fighters A Veterinarian Forensic Mystery is an amazing one of a kind piece. Gail Buchalter tells the story in a way that will keep pulling you into the book with every turn of the page. The amount of detail and research that went into this book will make you feel as if you are reading a true story. The book shows the type of collaboration from different agencies that goes into discovering and investigating dog fighting. Being set here on the Eastern Shore of Maryland brings you even deeper into the story and gives you a sense of how dog fighting can happen anywhere. This is a must read for anyone wanting to gain a perspective into world of protecting animals who are dragged into the cruel world of dogfighting.
I loved this book! I brought it with me to read on a cross country flight, and I was disappointed that I had to wait until I got to my hotel to finish it. Dog fighting is very prevalent in smaller, under served communities. Ms Buchalter captures the seediness of it all while keeping the story riveting.
Many of us in the animal welfare world have a "Benji"; a dog we want to be the example so no one else suffers needlessly. Thank you Gail Buchalter for writing this book!!

I couldn’t put this book down once I started it. It’s a great mystery. And I learned a lot about dog fighting (presented in a way that I, as an animal lover, could handle) and the people who work so hard to end this horrible “sport.” The relationship between Allison, the forensic veterinarian, and her live-in boyfriend, John, a Senior K-9 Trooper, often made me laugh out loud, despite the tensions that arose from their concerns about each others safety. And I especially loved Ella, the abused little pit bull they adopted and adore. This book is a must read for any animal lover.Fast
Dog fighting as a novel? Who'd a thought such a barbaric practice would make a riveting novel?
As a dog behavior expert, a cruelty investigator and legal consultant, AND having a master's degree in Veterinary Forensics I was a little cautious when I read this. After all, with years of CSI TV there is too much foolishness and too many easy answers found in 30 minutes.
But I entered the world of Dr. Allison Reeves and her partner Trooper John Thibert and I suddenly ran into - friends. Melinda Merck. Jason Byrd. Friends and colleagues from real life that were having a visit. And Buchalter not only captured the information accurately, but manages to capture the tone and sometimes morbid sense of humor those of us who work these cases share.
Thibert is just the right mix of cop smart-ass (and as a retired cop I know, trust me) and dedicated crusader. He knows when to bide his time and he knows when to bust heads no matter what might be politically correct.
Allison Reeves is also true to form for a Forensic Vet. She is strong and dedicated to doing the right thing while having the same late night tossing and turning we all share. We can't save them all, and that is a tough reality to sleep with.
The local twisted shelter director is also dead on with the wrong mindset and ill intentions. Those folks, gratefully fewer as years go by, deserve everything they get when their deeds are finally dragged into the open.
The fighters themselves are portrayed accurately, and actually a bit gently in some cases. There are of course a few fighters that don't see the "sport" as evil. Then there are the sadistic bastards. Both exist in real life and both are here in the book.
I enjoyed Gail's view into the world I live in, and credit her for seeing clearly, the ups and downs, and our occasional mistakes. I look forward to seeing Allison, John, and the rest in their next outing. Don't give me the excuse that "I just can't look at these kinds of things. They bother me." They should. Read this and learn instead of burying your head in the sand. Be disgusted - and then do something about it.

people need to read this book, it gives a great insight to pitbull fighting and what happens to the dogs, too. Not for kids.
