I compiled this collection at the insistence of Repairman Jack fans, especially the completists. A number of small presses have approached me to do a signed, limited first edition, but I'm not comfortable with charging a premium price for previously published material.

Okay, who says hounding doesn't pay off? Down the years F. Paul Wilson's rabid fans (count me as one) have pressed - and coaxed and cajoled and possibly even wheedled - for him to release all his Repairman Jack short fiction in one collected book. It's probable that the persistent grousing has had something like a Chinese water torture effect on the poor wretch, because here's QUICK FIXES: TALES OF REPAIRMAN JACK, which compiles all of the RJ short stories that were originally printed in various mystery/thriller anthologies. And, believe me, some of these stories are very hard to come by.

This paragraph is solely for that rare newbie what's unfamiliar with Repairman Jack. Jack happens to be an urban myth, an underground mercenary who hangs his hidden shingle in the bustling Big Apple. Only when every other desperate avenue had been explored - only when them lawful authorities won't do - do you call Repairman Jack. This cat boasts neither surname nor social security number. He exists off the grid. He works for cash only. It's not his fault that his adventures tend to be colored with the supernatural. Cosmic forces had long ago tapped him to play a pivotal role. And that's probably the draw for me: this average-looking guy - whose tools of the trade consist merely of quick reflexes, a mean streak, and a knack for improvisation - caught up in increasingly epic shenanigans. When Armageddon arrives (in the upcoming and heavily revised NIGHTWORLD), we know Repairman Jack will stand tall, because he's righteous like that. But, before that, do check out this must-have anthology which has Jack walking the mean streets of New York City and taking on his more mundane fixes (although, okay, "The Last Rakosh" and "Piney Power" do contain paranormal elements). I cannot tell you how happy I am that this collection is finally made available.

Awesomely, each of these stories is prefaced with an F. Paul Wilson introduction:

- "A Day in the Life" (First published in STALKERS, 1989) - Jack juggles two fixes as he dabbles in the protection racket and in the money laundering game while trying to survive several attempts on his life. In the end, as is his trademark, Jack metes out his own nasty brand of justice.

- "The Last Rakosh" (First published in The World Fantasy Convention 1990 Program Book and later incorporated into ALL THE RAGE) - Turns out, Jack didn't kill 'em all, them malevolent creatures from THE TOMB.

- "Home Repairs" (First published in COLD BLOOD, 1991, and later incorporated into CONSPIRACIES) - A reluctant Jack takes on a case of domestic violence, and, sure 'nuff, things quickly spiral out of control.

- "The Long Way Home" (First published in DARK AT HEART, 1992) - When Jack, who is fiercely protective of his anonymity, plays good samaritan to help out New York's Finest, his worst nightmare comes true: he gets arrested.

- "The Wringer" (First published in NIGHT SCREAMS, 1996, and later incorporated into FATAL ERROR) - In one of his most alarming fixes, Jack braces an unknown psychopath who's forcing the man whose family he had abducted to perform acts of escalating humiliation.

- "Interlude at Duane's" (First published in THRILLER, 2006) - When a sprawling shopping store is taken over by a well-armed gang of thugs, guess who's one of the hostages? Clean up on all the aisles!!

- "Do-Gooder" (First published as a broadside, which is a promotional one-paged sheet, from Lavendier Books, 2006) - In this quickie, more vignette than full story, a vengeance-minded ex-con harbors a fatal misconception about Jack. Oops!

- "Recalled" (First published in the Richard Matheson tribute anthology, HE IS LEGEND, 2009) - This chilling narrative is F. Paul Wilson's nod to Matheson's minimalist shocker "The Distributor." In both versions, an operative of some nebulous organization methodically works to spread fear and paranoia in a targeted neighborhood. But F. Paul Wilson arrives at a different ending.

- "Piney Power" (First published in FEAR: 13 STORIES OF SUSPENSE AND HORROR, 2010) - Set years before he became Repairman Jack, young Jack tags along with several peculiar kids who dwell in the New Jersey Pine Barrens as they investigate a case of toxic dumping in the woods. This one's just okay, I thought.

Quick Fixes tales of Repairman Jack edition by F Paul Wilson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

While I am not a fan of short stories these were excellent. I had read some of them before but found them just as exciting as the first or maybe the third time I read them. Repairman Jack never gets old to me or the least bit boring. This as well as every other book I have read by Mr. Wilson has been a page turner from beginning to end. If you haven't read this book I think you should I don't think anyone that looks for an exciting read would be disappointed. I would suggest that you read all the repairman Jack novels starting with the first and also the Adversary Cycle books are a must read. Mr. Wilson if you read this ( I hope you do) please don't stop writing about Repairman Jack so far he hasn't ended although I have still got to read the rewrite of Nightworld and hope that is not the end. You still have a lot of room to continue his story so I beg on behalf of all your fans that his story continues.
If you're a fan of the Repairman Jack series and you don't pick this up, you're a crazy person. And if you're not a fan, I have to say, this is a fantastic way to get into what is easily one of the best thriller series being written today. Quick Fixes is a collection of short stories about Repairman Jack, ranging from some that have been worked into the novels of the series to pieces published in compilations and long out of print anthologies. I've always thought that Wilson underrated his abilities as a short story author, and the Jack stories really bear that out; these works really strip Jack down to his core, reminding us that the series originated with a man whose intellect and knack for subterfuge made his mind just as big of a threat as his physical prowess. Stripped of the complex mythology of the series, Quick Fixes is Jack at his purest, telling tales that are as much about the cleverness of the plans as their success or failure. Really, there's not a truly weak story in the batch to me, but even if there were, stories like "The Long Way Home" (in which one of Jack's deepest fears comes true) and "Interlude at Duane's" (which finds Jack squaring off against a crew of robbers with only the contents of a drugstore at his disposal) would make this worth every single penny. Wilson says this was largely compiled for the completist, and as a longtime Jack fan, this collection is an absolute treat that really reminded me how much fun Jack stories can be. But even if you're a newcomer to the series, this is a great starting point - the short pieces and sharp writing are a great sample of the fantastic series to come. Whichever you are, you absolute can't miss this one - the cheap price and high quality make this a must buy for whatever e-book system you've got.
A short (9 stories), chronological anthology featuring fan fave Repairman Jack. Although all have been previously published, some were in some fairly obscure places. Except for (sort of) "The Last Rakosh", all the stories are just Jack taking care of things as he does best, devoid of any cosmic battle background. This is in large part because as it happens, the first 5 shorts in the anthology were all written long before 1998 when FPW brought Jack back and gave him his own series fighting against the otherness, 14 years years after his first appearance in the 1984 novel, "The Tomb" (which, incidentally, is technically a part of the Adversary Cycle/Secret History of the World, but really had very little to do with the cosmic battle that is at the heart of the Secret History, Adversary Cycle, and RJ series). So if you're looking for some hidden bits of the cosmic epic, you'll not find them here. But no worries, there's more than enough of just Jack to keep you entertained, and FP Wilson's trademark crisp writing and dry humor is much in evidence. My two favorites were "Interlude at Duane's" (as in Duane Reade) and "Piney Power", which features the young teenaged Jack of the three YA Jack novels.

Recommended for all, a must for true RJ fans.
