Nightcrawlers is one of those reads that will keep you absorbed in the book without even noticing that any time has passed. The characters display the gamut of human emotions and varying levels of decision making that provide the futuristic plot with a humbling human tone. I don't know what I would do in the scenario laid out in the book, but I do now that the characters felt as real as any person I've met. Fantastic book!Tags : Nightcrawlers [Kaylee A. Nightcrawlers by Kaylee McHugh is the best book I have read this past year. The book follows the protagonist as she struggles with the realization that perhaps the world she has been living in isn’t as perfect as she has been lead to believe.
The theme of inequality, in a dystopian future, is prevalent in the book, but it is presented in a way in which the reader does not become overwhelmed by the message. The inequality is fuel for the conflict in the plot, where lines divide societies, families, and even the young protagonist’s understanding of her world.
McHugh provides a truly complete experience a stunningly human protagonist, deep supporting characters, real human conflicts, all set up against a not so distant future backdrop that challenges to the reader to think about the world around them. It is filled with twists and turns all leading up to an ending that demands a sequel.
The setting of the book isn't completely unfamiliar. We are in a dystopian futuristic reality where society is split by one deciding factor skin color. This is due to the fact that skin cancer has affected over the years the "lighter" skin colored people of the society and forced them to seek refuge in the underground. The darker skinned people are the ones that remain on top (literally), where most resources remain, and where the main government and bureaucracy operates. At the start of the novel, the society has been operating in this manner for quite some time, and as a result of this, segregation between the two societies is at an all time high. People from the underground are looked at extremely pejoratively, and are not even allowed above or else they could risk being executed. At the heart of all of this is Micah, a girl from the above ground world who finds herself mixed up in the middle of growing tensions between the two Worlds. Throughout the book, she becomes exposed to new sides of her own society, and eventually even goes on to explore the underground, which eventually shakes her entire moral foundation.
So far I'm sure you are thinking this book sounds more like a mix of V for Vendetta & 1984 than anything innovative. FALSE! Although this book does contain some of those works of fiction's themes (and let's face it all dystopian novel or films will have some sort of semblance to one another), you continue reading it BECAUSE the author takes the time to show you how the world she has designed stands apart from those other works. Even more so, she does it in a creative way.
It is because of those narrative twists, and how McHugh subtly switches from different narrative perspectives in Nightcrawlers that you keep reading. In fact, it is when you think you have a grasp on Micah, and the worlds' surrounding her that McHugh will throw in a curveball, and makes you question everything you've read so far. It is precisely because of this that I know I will be buying McHugh's sequel to Nightcrawlers.
All in all, you should not buy Nightcrawlers if you are looking for a book with rich prose, astounding imagery, and filled with stylistic features. This is not the next neo-Jane Austen novel you have been looking to feast your eyes (and mind) upon.
McHugh's book succeeds in that the author's prose flows very well from cover to cover, and it truly allows you to escape your own reality as the walls of the author's dystopian universe stand their ground throughout the entirety of the story.
I had a little trouble getting into the book but once I got to part two I was hooked! I enjoyed the descriptions of the people and places, it felt like I was there. Can't wait for a sequel!
Very good. Caught my attention from the beginnning. Highly recommend. Great book for both teens and adults alike! Looking forward to other books from this author.
An excellent read. I enjoyed the plot twists and found myself unable to put it down until I finished. Nightcrawlers is a well-written, intelligent and mature novel that explores a divided society and what happens when a young girl questions what she has always accepted as the truth. I can't wait for the sequel!
This book is based on a very intriguing premise - two worlds living in separation and fear of each other - so different and yet the same. The characters, situations, fears, loyalties, and plot twists keep you guessing as to what it's coming in each new chapter. The book has been set up perfectly for the reader to jump into the next novel of...a trilogy? Hope so!
A futuristic theme but it kept me turning pages. I normally am not a fan of this type story but I must admit I liked it. My only suggestion is the author give more description to her characters. I like to "see and know" them in my mind's eye. Plus I would like to know more about their surroundings so I can "live" with them more. Great job on the story.
