I guess maybe it's me . . . It was classic KA material, however, I felt it a little flat (the reason Frankie didn't want to go there with Benny - of course she was involved with his brother, but I didn't think that was a strong enough reason to always put him at bay). They had a lot of banter, some was funny, I thought some was annoying. Benny came across as TOO perfect. There was talk of catastrophe always seeming to follow Frankie, but I just didn't get that (ie., Sal's reference to dead bodies falling on her).As usual with KA books, the last 25% is where the drama starts to occur. That whole drama seemed to go really really fast and lame and to me, anti-climatic.
I love Kristen Ashley's works, but I'm finding with the last few books, that she is just putting out stuff to put stuff out - I'd rather wait a bit and have a very juicy story - told by KA, as only KA can. (I find in finishing this book, that I was left wanting. So I started re-reading one of her older books, just to remind myself why I enjoy reading her stories.)

The Promise The 'Burg Series Book 5 edition by Kristen Ashley Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
I could not wait to get my hands on another Kristen Ashley book. (I've read every single one of them.) So when The Promise finally came available, I was jumping for joy. Then I was let down. Normally KA's books are non-stop nail biting, Laugh Out Loud, Action, Suspense, Love, Alpha and so much more moments. This one had SO MUCH thinking going on, there wasn't much of ANYTHING Else! UGH! What a let down!
A little bit about the book
Benny Bianchi is a full-blooded Italian who is a dropdead gorgeous, (of course), pizza making alpha on a mission. He's looking for a woman that he can settle down and build a life with. And that women is Francesca Concetti. (A.k.a. Frankie). Frankie is also an Italian with the temper and crazy attitude to drive any man insane. Even though seven years earlier she was dating Vinny Bianchi, Benny's brother, she's always felt a connection with Benny. The story begins with Frankie being in the hospital from a gunshot wound she sustained from running from a crazy man in the previous book. While Frankie's trying to heal from the gun shot wound and the crazy ass trauma she just endured, she's also trying to avoid her wack-job of a family and the Bianchi's. Especially Benny. And Benny is trying to do everything he can to show Frankie that they belong together. Now granted you have your normal hot alpha male and drop dead beautiful female characters along with some crazy ass suspenseful action, that you always get in KA's books. But, there is so much thinking from the characters, that there really isn't much else going on in this book. At times there was so much thinking written, that I would forget what was asked, said or what was happening before those thoughts, and when the talking started again, I wouldn't remember what was going on and I would have to go back and reread the previous talking so I could figure it out. It sucked! It took me out of the story. Which in turn, irritated the crap out of me! As I mentioned earlier, I have read every.single.book. of KA's and this one was way too much work to stay in the story. This is the first time ever reading one of KA's books that I almost gave up on it. EVER! But, as always with her books, I knew something exciting would have to show up towards the end and therefore pushed through. I definitely was not let down in that aspect. Seems the last book in this series was March of 2012, I had a hard time remembering things that lead up to this one, so I reread it. (Games of the Heart. THAT one I really liked so it wasn't really a hard ship to do.) KA does fill little bits and pieces in from past books in this one.
Unfortunately, I would only recommend this book if you don't mind most of it just being thoughts, and if you want to know details of what happens with Frankie and Benny. If you are not into reading character thoughts very much, don't waste your time. Needless to say, I still can't wait to get my hands on another one of her books and will look forward to it. Because regardless of this one being somewhat of a failure to me, she still knows how to write one hell of an alpha, action, suspense, love story. Let's just hope the books in the future, do a lot more stuff other than just thinking about it.
Kristen Ashley (KA) is my book crack. and much like crack you either have an addiction to it or you are a firm believer it is horrible. I really believe there is no in-between for her books you love them or hate them. Her stories probably aren’t good for my health as most of the time they have really skewed ideas of healthy relationships and seduction.
Real World - Some guy that you have been avoiding like the plague takes you home from the hospital and won’t let you have your purse, phone or keys and gets his neighbors to watch you when he has to leave is totally kidnapping.
KA World - It’s hot and proves how much he cares about you getting better and he knows there is a connection between you. So it doesn’t matter that you were his dead brothers fiancé, that man has been gone for seven years and you replace every cell in your body in seven years so it is like you are a whole new person. If he has to back up against the wall and kiss you to make you realize how much you want him all the better.
See it only really works in a book world. Most of that stuff would just seem creepy in the real world and I’m pretty sure you can call the cops for behavior like that. Still I was pretty excited for Benny and Frankie’s story after At Peace.
❧ The Good News ❧
I enjoyed the courting/relationship drama between Benny and Frankie. Even though I totally fell into the camp of Benny should have to grovel more to win Frankie’s affections after the way he and his family treated and blamed her for the death of their brother/son. But overall Benny was one of KA’s alphas that were actually easier to like. He was pretty supportive of Frankie’s goals and dreams and didn’t force her into a situation where she had to choose between him and her career. He was pretty patient overall and even though they have bumps and hiccups along the way the love story was pretty believable. Plus he was pretty in tuned with her and seemed to understand Frankie.
Not only do we get Frankie and Benny but we get quite a bit of Cal, Vi and the girls….including Jo and Vi’s wedding. It was pretty cute and a bit cheesy but overall enjoyable to see the Wedding between Jo/Vi and their very new addition baby Angela.
☠ The Bad News ☠
I wish I can say that I thought this book’s side plot, the crazy mystery that seems to be happening on the side, was well thought out but honestly it just seemed a bit thrown in there. We actually don’t even touch on it really until half way through the book. That isn’t a bad thing necessarily but after this series started with some pretty strong side plots with quite a bit of danger it is a formula that I’m expecting. None of the main characters were even kidnapped, well except Frankie by Benny and that doesn’t count.
Sure we get to see Luke Stark from the Rock Chick series….which I love. But the resolution to the danger was a bit lack luster for a KA book and some of it was very off page.
♠ Overall Conclusion ♠
This book gets
4.5 stars for the romance
2 stars for plot
3 stars for Jo’s over the top wedding cheesiness
4 hopeful stars for the next book (Cheryl really deserves a great guy of her own)
= 3.38 The Promise of you stars
