I really enjoyed the setting for The Hollow, and I think it is a very unique taking an existing story like Sleepy Hollow and throwing those elements in the story. Verday seems very knowledgeable on her subject and the vivid descriptions are awesome.
I enjoy Abbey's character, how she is quirky and has an authentic voice. Her emotions are understandably all over the place, and I feel right with her. I also appreciate that she has a different interest- the perfumes. It is something I haven't seen explored, and I am glad to see a character with a clear idea of her future and her plans.
I tore through this book and was left with some questions, and I was very glad that I had the next one and could start it right away.
I like how the memories of Kristen slowly pieces together who she was, and I really feel for her. The friendship between Abbey and Kristen makes me smile.
Caspian is very mysterious and I really am drawn to his character. I wanted to know what was going on and why he did the things he did.
I also like Ben- he is funny and easygoing. I would love to be his girlfriend, so I am torn between his team and Caspian's.

I am really surprised that the reviews on this aren't higher than 3 1/2 stars. I found "The Hollow" to be an excellent story with "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" story complementing the story-not being the story. Caspian and Abigail's relationship is written beautifully and keeps you turning the pages to find out more of their story. The mystery of how/why Abigail's best friend, Kristen died is very well written keeping you wondering about details even at the end of the book (I am hoping more is answered on that in "The Haunted"). And Ms. Verday's descriptions of feelings in certain situations makes you really connect with the characters. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading "The Haunted".
This makes the 3rd time I've read this so I guess a review is due!! I love this story! I think it is amazing how it ties in with the legends of Sleepy Hollow. The setting is perfect and even though I thought it was going to be a very depressing story at the beginning, it turns into a wonderful story of hope & love as Abbey searches for peace after losing her best friend. Caspian is just dreamy & a perfect match for Abbey. And I love that for once, Abbey has the correct response to finding out about the supernatural! (That's about all I can say about that) Anyway, this is definitely a unique story & one I will probably read several more times.
The Hollow was a little too slow paced in my opinion. It took until roughly page 400 out of 513 pages for the action of the book to pick up. Too much time was spent trying to illustrate the depressive mood of the protagonist, Abbey, who at the beginning of the book has just lost her best friend. It was very obvious that Abbey was upset--400+ pages weren't necessary to get that point across. I never really understood what Abbey saw in Caspian, the boy she only ever seemed to run into at a cemetery. I don't know about you, but a red flag would immediately go up in the back of my mind if I only ever ran into a guy at a cemetery, something that never seems to faze Abbey until the end of the book. Aside from the fact that he was older than Abbey, attend a rival high school, liked to draw, and had a father who worked at an auto body shop, I really didn't get a handle on what his personality was or what made him appealing to Abbey, aside from his good looks. I found myself more drawn to Ben a classmate who made her laugh and who, in spite or Abbey's self-inflicted seclusion and the overt hostility she directed towards him seemed to be really interested in her. However, the cliffhanger ending was done well enough that I am going to pick up The Haunted and hope that there is a little more action in it, and that I finally understand the currently ambiguous attraction between Abbey and Caspian.
Wow, I am completely and totally disappointed with this book's abrupt and completely unsatisfying ending! I was literally shocked when I came to the last chapter and found out that it was an "epilogue".

I am glad to know that there is indeed more to the story but annoyed that I will have till Fall 2010 and Fall 2011 to see if any of the loose ends will be tied up. Normally I love sequels but this feels more like the writer stopped mid-book and decided to go ahead and release what she had so far. There are lots of unanswered questions that will hopefully be addressed in the next book...such as what kind of connection did Ben have to Kristen? Supposedly Kristen and Abbey were inseparable, so how is it that Ben sincerely seems to feel a real loss yet Abbey barely even recognizes him as a classmate from her small school?

I gave it three stars because I found the story intriguing but the ending (or lack thereof)frustrating. I would recommend waiting till at least the next book is out before reading.
The majority of this book is very slow-moving. Rather than a chilling story of the supernatural, it's more a picture of Abbey's day-to-day life; in the months following the death of her best friend Kristen, she struggles to hold herself together and deal with her grief while coping with school, family, holidays and an uncertain romance.

All of the above would normally label "The Hollow" as Not My Kind of Book, and I can certainly see where it wouldn't be to everyone's tastes.

With that said, I was surprised to find that for the most part, I enjoyed it a lot. I thought Verday's writing style was lovely; the story had a kind of wistful, bittersweet, sleepy-small-town atmosphere which I thought was well served by its slow pace, and which really drew me in. I found Abbey a likable and believable character, and I appreciated her attempts to hold onto her plans and dreams for her future -- and her memories of good times past -- even as she struggled with guilt over the knowledge that she was living a life Kristen would never have.

All in all, while it's not something I would read if I were looking for action and high adventure, this was a nice book to curl up with on a quiet, rainy evening, and I definitely look forward to reading the sequel when I've got the time.
