This Shattered World A Starbound Novel Amie Kaufman Meagan Spooner Books
I have not read a book in awhile that has made me want to gush about it like this one does. I have not read a book in awhile that has taken me on such an extreme emotional rollercoaster ride. Or read one that is so creative and unique all at the same time. They knocked it out of the park with the first book, and the second book in the Starbound series just keeps the spectacular theme going. I love anything that has to do with space and new planets. The infinite possibilites available and the ability to have your characters discover whatever you can imagine really draws me in. The swampy world with the bog, caves, and constant cloud cover really make for a unique enviroment to set this story in. The love story is unique and real. It's slightly Romeo and Juliet, but so much better than anything that I have read in awhile. Because it is down-to-earth, patient, and deep. Not flighty, insta-love like some stories can be. And the twists in this book. They took my breath away. The major turning point in this book had my chest tight and my mind screaming "I hope this is a dream scene. I hope this is a dream scene. I hope this is a dream scene." I read for pages hoping it was a long elaborate imagining because the sorrows couldn't possibly be real. And then they were. And my heart hit the floor again. Everything after that built upon that initial shock. The twists continued to be excellent. The kind that keep you guessing. I loved every minute of the ride. Then the ending. What a beautiful and peaceful scene they created. In the end my heart was left full and satisfied with the wonderful story I was privileged to witness. Needless to say I cannot wait for the third installment.Tags : Amazon.com: This Shattered World: A Starbound Novel (9781423171034): Amie Kaufman, Meagan Spooner: Books,Amie Kaufman, Meagan Spooner,This Shattered World: A Starbound Novel,Disney-Hyperion,1423171039,Action & Adventure - General,Romance - General,Science Fiction - General,Insurgency,Insurgency;Fiction.,JUVENILE FICTION Action & Adventure General,JUVENILE FICTION Fantasy & Magic,JUVENILE FICTION Love & Romance,Love,Love stories,Science fiction,Science fiction.,Space colonies,Space colonies;Fiction.,Survival,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 7-9),Dystopian,Fiction,Fiction-Romance,General fiction (Children's Teenage),JUVENILE,Juvenile Fiction,Juvenile Grades 7-9 Ages 12-14,Love & Romance,Monograph Series, any,Science Fiction Fantasy (Young Adult),TEEN'S FICTION ROMANCE,TEEN'S FICTION SCIENCE FICTION,United States,YOUNG ADULT FICTION,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Science Fiction General,Young Adult Fiction Action & Adventure General,Young Adult Fiction Fantasy General,Young Adult Fiction Romance General,Young Adult FictionAction & Adventure - General,Young Adult FictionRomance - General,Dystopian,Love & Romance,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Science Fiction General,Young Adult Fiction Action & Adventure General,Young Adult Fiction Fantasy General,Young Adult Fiction Romance General,Young Adult FictionAction & Adventure - General,Young Adult FictionRomance - General,Fiction,Science Fiction Fantasy (Young Adult),YOUNG ADULT FICTION,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 7-9),General fiction (Children's Teenage)
This Shattered World A Starbound Novel Amie Kaufman Meagan Spooner Books Reviews
This Shattered World was a tad better then I was expecting it to be. It improved on the plot and story where I thought the first one was lacking. However it kept the romance aspect which I found unnecessary again. The writing is still very tight and clean. Since I have only read The Illuminae files by Kaufman (which is a co-authored series) and I have yet to read anything by Spooner, I think the write very similarly. The plot was a lot more engaging in this one and I do think that the bigger cast of characters helped in this aspect. Even though We are meeting all these characters for the first time I did grow to feel for their situation. It should be interesting to see how this wraps up in the next book. I think I have a clue on who the lead for Their Fractured Light will be. All in all This Shattered World improved in some areas which I think helped and I hope to see that carried over into the final book.
4.2 I felt like this second installment really showed the authors' ability to write fairly different characters from the first novel, despite those characters having similar paths. Jubilee and Flynn's story is different from Lilac and Tarver's in that it builds at a more tentative pace and while there is some urgency to the growth of both relationships, the latter is built upon fear for their own lives, while the former is built upon fear for the lives of their people.
As the story progresses, you're given a small sampling of what has been happening on Avon, as foreshadowed in These Broken Stars. I was also a little surprised with myself that I didn't see Tarver's connection to this story earlier, but was pleased with Tarver and Lilac's introduction and the contribution they provide. Plus, any taste of their banter back and forth is gratifying!
We learn more in this sequel of the "whispers" - their wants and struggles - and what has been driving them all these years. There is a fair bit more world building in this installment than the first (though I certainly miss our beautiful planet) as well, in the sense that you see and feel for the way the people have been affected by the choices of someone they've never met. The authors do well at showing the hardships experienced by those that aren't privileged enough too experience the upper decks of a luxury spaceliner such as the Icarus (though I have a feeling they would not be disappointed about that) and how individuals choose different paths to deal with that strife. I really enjoyed getting more insight into the people of this world (after all, this sequel has a whole host of characters, unlike These Broken Stars) and learning more of what has been happening for the last ten years.
I'm looking forward to starting the last book in this trilogy to see how our characters (and "new" ones to come) deal with what has been discovered.
