This book caused a whirlwind of emotions for me. One sentence in particular will forever be etched in my memory. "It would be that way for me, living in one place and carrying another place in my heart."I grew up in Lancaster County, PA. and always preferred simplicity in life. During the blizzard of 1993, a friend and I found ourselves stuck in an International Scout in the middle of an Amish family's field. They welcomed us into their home and showed us the true meaning of generosity.
While reading this story, I was given a glimpse of how the Amish children might have seen me during the four days I was blessed with in their home.
Yes, to me it was 'A World Away'. A world I will always carry in my heart.
I highly recommend this book.

Seldom do I take the time to sit down and read a book from cover to cover..seems like something ALWAYS pulls me away. But not this time--fantastic!
a very interesting inside look at a lifestyle that is not understood by many.
Aimed at young adults, this novel is a fine read for grown-ups, too! Wonderful storytelling, believable characters, I really enjoyed the book.
A wonderful introduction to Amish culture I imagine, but a bit on the juvenile side - I think it would be perfect for a young girl - 14-20 or so. I did enjoy it.
I loved reading this book end joining Eliza on her journey. It was exciting to consider "our" world from her perspective and to imagine how I might react to similar experiences. Would I be as brave? As true to myself? What would challenge me?
I always love a story about adventure, love, and a family secret, but this story reached another level... it became about "what's truly important in life." How do you choose your priorities? Who supports you and who questions you? When choices are tough, where do you turn and who can you trust? It's a story about growing up and discovering who you've become.
I would have to say that I absolutely loved this book and would definitely recommend it to my friends. Yes it is a great book for teenagers but also us older folks greatly enjoy it too. I loved reading about the twists and turns Eliza faced as she tried to decide what she wanted for her future. Would definitely love to see a sequel to this book. What happened to Eliza after she made her decision, what happened with her Aunt Beth, and definitely more about the simple lifestyle of the Amish. Thank You Nancy Grossman for such a wonderful book. Happy Reading Everyone.
Eliza is an Amish girl who has just turned 16- she is about to enter her "rumspringa" (running around time). There is so much about the world that ELiza would love to know- but her mother is dead set against her having a "rumspringa" period!! However Eliza talks to her dad- and he is a little more open to the idea!!! Then one nite while Eliza and her mother are serving supper to "Englishers" one of the women asks her- would you be willing to come to Chicago and be a nanny for my two children. To Eliza this is an answer to prayer!!! After much arguing and discussing Eliza's parents allow her to go to Chicago to be a nanny!! Eliza gets to Chicago- she has never seen a movie- never watched tv- never done many of the things that the Englisher's do!! However with it being her rumspringa- she is allowed to dress and do the activities that all english teenagers do- including dressing like a regular teenager!! During this time- deep dark secrets come out of the closet- and things happen that Eliza could have never imagined!! Will Eliza jump the fence and turn English or will she return to her Amish Community?? Very enjoyable book that had me hooked from the first page- definitely a five star book- I hated to see the book end- am hoping that Nancy Grossman may write a sequel to the story!!!
