THE EARTH GIVES WAY TO THE SEA,
THE SEA BOWS BEFORE THE WIND,
THE WIND FEEDS THE FLAME,
THE FLAME BURNS THE WORLD OF MAN DOWN TO THE EARTH.
The sleepy town of White Halls harbors a dangerous secret. On a picturesque street, two houses down from a lovely little park, in a quaint little home with a wraparound porch, lives a family that seems rather normal. Sure, their twenty-year-old son, Xander, still lives at home, but he’s going to college and dating the leader of the school’s top sorority. It’s all very… normal.
However, when a man is miraculously saved from being hit by a bus, Xander’s life turns in to the living embodiment of the tornadoes he can suddenly create with a flick of his wrist. Whether he wants this gift or not, Xander must learn to use his new ‘super power’ quickly if he wants to survive. For his kind is a dying race, and when this sleepy town has a sudden influx of new, blonde, fire wielders, no one is safe, especially Xander. It doesn’t help that one of these blondes happens to be the most beautiful girl he has ever seen. Xander can’t deny the instant connection he feels to her so, when she tries to kill him, it certainly makes things complicated.

I bought this book a long time ago, intrigued by the blurb and encouraged by its price tag of $0, then forgot about it. I recently ran across book four of the series on Amazon and remembered I had this, so I returned to read it. I should probably have kept not remembering it.There is a memorable line in this book, a line which made me laugh out loud and which decided my final evaluation of this book. It goes like this, "Lady Sammy has returned." To understand why I laughed, you have to know that Sammy is a member of the Fire Caste, and there are exactly three named members of the Fire Caste. They are Balor, Abraxas...and Sammy. Let's try them out. "Lord Balor has arrived...Lord Abraxas has arrived...and Lady Sammy has arrived." Balor and Abraxas sound unusual and exotic, fitting with the word "Lord." Sammy, however. For that matter, even our hero Xander has a cool name. Sammy, though?
"Lady Sammy?"
LOL.
I heard somewhere that this book was originally a short story submitted to a magazine, then revised and lengthened. I think it still feels like a short story or novella. It has a storyline of the protagonist finding out he's special, learning to use his powers, discovering his family was keeping secrets from him, fighting the enemy redshirts, and then fighting the enemy leader and defeating him. The problem is that every part of the familiar, sequential storyline is dealt with too briefly. Everything went by so quickly that I had trouble emotionally investing or believing in the story. I read about Xander being angry at his parents and grandfather for keeping secrets from him. Five minutes later, he's talking about refusing to damn the world by doing nothing, and says he's going to fight the Fire Caste.
Which brinngs me to another problem with this short novel of less than 200 pages. Both Xander and Jessica have the emotional stability of kids. Which is what they act like. Kids. Xander is angry at his family for treating him like a kid, which he is, and leaves to catch some air. His grandfather explains the relationsihp between the Wind Caste and the FIre Caste, and Xander all of a sudden declares he's going to fight the Fire Caste to protect the world and prevent the apocalypse. This is a lie, however, because he promptly tells the FIre Caste he just found out he's specical and not just another slacker college student. No mention of protecting the people. No, it's all about him. After this he suddenly becomes all forgiving and loving toward his parents. Xander waxes eloquently about how he feels he'll never see them again, that their deaths are a given. Xander and his grandfather go see the other Wind Warriors and suddenly he's sad there are so few of them! His emotions are all over the place.
And now Jessica. She's the president of a sorority. I admit I know little about sororities, but I would assume sorority president is a position of responsibility. Jessica is not acting responsible, she's a kid having a tantrum. Except I can sympathize with her. Imagine, you have someone you like. You've been friends for years, closer than just friends, yet not quite a couple. As sorority president, there's a long list of people wanting to go to the formal with you, but you are waiting for him. Except a new girl ships up eight days before the formal and he is smitten with the new girl. And eventually he goes to the formal with her. You're angry, of course, but are you the one in the wrong here? Because Jessica is made out to be a bitch in this part, when Xander is the wrong-doer.
Xander is also depicted as innovative for coming up with a simple application of his powers that startle every Fire Warrior it is used against. He creates a bubble to forcibly extinguish fires by depriving them of oxygen. Really? No one thought to try this before? Boy Wonder Xander who masters his power after two tries is the only one who knows basic physics?

Wind Warrior World Aflame Book 1 eBook Jon Messenger Reviews
Wind Warrior is an entertaining book written by Jon Messenger. This book was well written and was rather unique in its concept, which I really enjoyed a lot. It seems this is a mini series of four books so I will probably pick up the rest in the near future since I really want to see how this will all work out. I really enjoyed that the author came up with this different book that has a well developed plot with some nice twists in it. The pace of the book is just right, never dragging out nor rushing you through the story, very important to me. The plot actually in a paranormal way makes "sense" so I am curious to see how the next step in this series will develop, curious if the author will stick to that concept or become more outlandish.
Xander is a very likable character and I like how he handles being thrown into this new world of things he had no idea about. I enjoy seeing him grow into his new role. His grandpa is an interesting character and definitely not what you thought he may be.
I picked this book up on a whim and enjoyed it quite a bit. Enough to pick up the remaining ones in the future once I get through some others that are currently on my reading list.
3 Platypires for Wind Warrior by Jon Messenger
I was really looking forward to reading Wind Warrior. I think the cover is amazing and it was really what grabbed me. What I was not expecting was that it read like a middle grade book. The whole time I kept thinking of Percy Jackson and Bobby Pendragon yet this novel is for adults. Xander is a 20 year old college student living at home and having nothing much going for him till he develops a super power. The writing was pretty simple which even though Xander is a 20 year old man , I kept think he was a young teenager. I think I had real trouble picturing him as older.
Now as for the story, I thought it was pretty good. It kept me pretty interested and it was really quick read. The story was really fact paced and I sorta wish there was more development in the back story. Here's hoping more is revealed in the upcoming novels.
Overall , I liked Wind Warrior and plan on reading the next book in the series.
I have to admit, I had my panties in a bunch and had to cool off for a solid month before I could write a review.
I was a huge fan of the cartoon, Avatar The Last Airbender, and this book was like a knock off from that. (That is if it had been set in modern times and Aang was a college student who had a crush on a fire bender... er... "Fire warrior."
Despite my obvious hang ups that sent me on a violent rampage throughout my house in search of my fellow readers... the writing wasn't bad. So after I cooled off, I decided to come back and state the things that I DID like and rate it more on that than completely on my hangups.
It was well written. The descriptions were crisp clear and understandable. The characters were greatly developed so the usual side character acting "out of character" never happened and that made me happy. The thoughts and conversations seemed real and not forced. The author twisted the tale to make it his own rather than a full blown knock off. The writing style was wonderful and flowed well. I enjoyed the story enough to finish the book, even though I had the ... anger that I did. (My anger was pointed at the fact, that instead of writing something truly unique, he copied an anime series. He has talent and a brilliant knack for writing. I wish I would have found one of his other works, then I probably wouldn't be so disappointed.)
I know many would enjoy this tale, but me being a fan of the television series and even the movie, I probably won't proceed past this novel. I hope many do enjoy this book, and I wish the writer luck.
